Government reaffirms commitment to making Rasmale a reality

Rasmale a reality2

The government has once again confirmed that Rasmale will move forward as pledged by President Mohamed Muizzu.

During a recent press conference, Chief Spokesperson Heena Waleed emphasised that Rasmale remains central to the administration’s housing strategy. She described the project as a cornerstone of the President’s commitment to provide adequate housing for all Maldivians.

Rasmale at the Heart of National Housing Plans

Heena Waleed stated that President Muizzu considers housing access a core national priority. According to her, the President has consistently pushed for large-scale solutions that address overcrowding and rising housing demand in the Greater Malé Region.

Rasmale forms the backbone of that long-term plan.

She explained that the President previously sought to include Rasmale in the national budget to accelerate implementation. However, the previous Parliament did not approve the requested funding. That decision slowed the initial phase of development.

Despite the delay, the administration has not retreated from its pledge. Officials continue to advance planning and preparatory work to ensure Rasmale becomes a reality.

30,000 Housing Units Planned in Rasmale

The government aims to construct approximately 30,000 housing units in Rasmale. This large-scale development targets the growing demand for livable and affordable homes in the capital region.

By expanding residential capacity through Rasmale, authorities intend to ease congestion in Malé and provide structured urban growth.

The 30,000-unit target signals one of the most ambitious housing undertakings in the Maldives. Officials believe Rasmale will transform how the country approaches long-term urban planning.

Instead of relying on short-term housing schemes, the administration wants Rasmale to function as a fully integrated city with proper infrastructure, services, and community facilities.

Overcoming Budget Setbacks

Funding challenges initially slowed Rasmale’s rollout. However, government officials now stress that financial hurdles will not derail the project.

Heena Waleed highlighted that the administration continues to explore mechanisms to advance Rasmale’s development. She noted that strong political will remains behind the initiative.

By reaffirming its commitment publicly, the government aims to reassure citizens who view Rasmale as a key pathway to homeownership.

Broader Government Initiatives

The press conference also formed part of a wider effort by the President’s Office to update the public on major national programmes.

Alongside Rasmale, officials highlighted initiatives led by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and other agencies focused on improving public services and strengthening community wellbeing.

However, Rasmale stood out as one of the most significant development priorities discussed during the briefing.

A Long-Term Vision for Rasmale

Rasmale represents more than a housing project. It reflects a strategic expansion plan designed to address land scarcity and urban density in the capital region.

If completed as outlined, Rasmale will provide thousands of families with permanent housing solutions while creating opportunities for economic activity and infrastructure growth.

Government officials continue to frame Rasmale as a transformational development rather than a temporary response to housing shortages.

By reaffirming its pledge, the administration has signaled that Rasmale remains firmly on the national agenda.

As planning progresses and implementation accelerates, Rasmale continues to stand at the center of the Maldives’ future housing landscape.
