The Maldives government has signed a major agreement with China to support the construction of 30,000 housing units in Rasmale, marking the largest housing initiative under the administration of Mohamed Muizzu.
The housing deal was one of 20 bilateral agreements signed between the Maldives and China during President Muizzu’s first official state visit to Beijing, signaling deepening cooperation between the two countries in infrastructure and development.
Major Boost for Rasmale Housing Project
According to Ali Haidar Ahmed, who is part of the high-level ministerial delegation accompanying the president, the agreement specifically targets the development of 30,000 housing units in Rasmale.
The project forms a central pillar of the government’s strategy to address housing shortages in the Greater Malé Region and accelerate the development of the new eco-city.
However, the Housing Minister did not disclose the financial structure of China’s support.
“We will share those details only after further discussions,” Dr. Haidar stated.
As of now, it remains unclear whether the Chinese assistance will come in the form of:
- A grant
- A concessional loan
- A commercial financing package
- Or a hybrid funding model
Part of Broader Maldives–China Cooperation
The Rasmale housing agreement is part of a wider package of cooperation deals signed during President Muizzu’s visit, reflecting renewed momentum in Maldives–China development partnerships.
Large-scale housing delivery has been identified by the current administration as a national priority, particularly to ease population pressure in the capital region.
Long-Term Vision for Rasmale
President Muizzu has previously announced that Rasmale is planned to accommodate up to 65,000 housing units once fully developed.
If realized, this would make Rasmale:
- One of the largest residential developments in the Maldives
- A major urban expansion zone for Greater Malé
- A key component of the country’s long-term housing strategy
The newly announced 30,000-unit China-supported phase would represent a substantial portion of that overall target.
What Happens Next
While the agreement marks a significant milestone, several key details are still pending, including:
- Financing structure
- Project timeline
- Contractor selection
- Phasing plan
- Eligibility criteria for housing recipients
- Further technical discussions between Maldivian and Chinese authorities are expected before full implementation details are released.
Why This Matters
The Rasmale housing program is being closely watched because it could:
- Dramatically expand housing supply near Malé
- Influence future property market dynamics
- Shape urban growth in the Greater Malé Region
- Strengthen Maldives–China infrastructure ties
However, the pace of land reclamation, infrastructure rollout, and financing clarity will ultimately determine how quickly the project moves from agreement to construction.
