15,000 Rasmale Plots Announced for Mal Residents
A major milestone in the Maldives housing agenda has been announced, with plans to open applications for 15,000 residential plots in Rasmale exclusively for eligible Mal residents. The announcement reinforces the governments focus on long-term housing solutions and the strategic development of Rasmale as a key urban extension of Mal.
Who Will Be Eligible for Rasmale Plots?
The 15,000 plots in Rasmale are planned for Mal residents who meet specific criteria focused on need and long-term residency. According to the announcement, the opportunity to apply will be opened to:
- Maldivian citizens who are registered residents of Mal
- People who have been living in Mal for an extended period
- Those listed in the official Mal registry
- Individuals and families interested in exchanging existing plots under the new scheme
The allocation system is expected to prioritize those over 18 years of age who do not currently have adequate housing, following a familial housing concept designed to ensure that those most in need receive support first.
Rasmale Reclamation Progress and Timeline
The plots will be issued from Rasmale, which is currently under active reclamation. The reclamation work required to support this housing project is expected to be completed within approximately five months.
The pace of reclamation in Rasmale is also set to increase, with the speed projected to triple in the coming month. This acceleration is linked to additional dredging capacity being brought in specifically to support the ongoing works in Rasmale and other key reclamation sites.
Part of a Wider Housing and Reclamation Strategy
The decision to allocate 15,000 plots in Rasmale is part of a much broader housing and reclamation strategy aimed at easing pressure on Mal and expanding liveable, well-planned urban spaces across the Greater Mal region.
Alongside Rasmale, reclamation has also begun for the remaining portion of Hulhumal Phase 3, with the explicit goal of increasing housing capacity for Mal residents. An agreement has been signed for the reclamation of the rest of Giraavaru Falhu as well, with key dredging equipment expected to arrive soon to advance these works.
The land reclamation of North Thilafushi is also scheduled to resume before the end of the year, forming another important component of the wider development and housing expansion agenda.
Flats and Housing Units Under Multiple Financing Arrangements
In addition to serviced plots, the housing program includes a pipeline of flat construction projects supported by various financing facilities and partnerships. These include:
- An agreement expected to be signed to build 3,000 new flats, with additional housing projects planned in collaboration with international partners.
- Ongoing work on 4,000 housing units arranged under Indias line of credit, with several of these units already completed and occupied.
- Plans for work to begin on more than 7,000 additional housing units over the coming year, significantly expanding the total housing stock available to Mal and Greater Mal residents.
What the 15,000 Rasmale Plots Mean for Mal Residents
For many Mal-based families, the announcement of 15,000 plots in Rasmale represents a major opportunity to secure long-term housing in a newly planned urban area. With reclamation accelerating and parallel projects underway in Hulhumal, Giraavaru Falhu and North Thilafushi, the overall housing landscape around Mal is undergoing a significant transformation.
As details of the application process are finalized and announced, Mal residents who meet the eligibility criteria will be able to explore how Rasmale fits into their long-term housing plans within the evolving Greater Mal region.
