Resorts Closest to Malé by Speedboat

Not every Maldives resort needs a seaplane. Some are only 10 to 40 minutes from Malé's airport by boat, which saves money, works for late arrivals and keeps you close to the capital. Here are the main ones, with transfer times as the resorts themselves state them.

Many Maldives resorts are far from the capital and need a seaplane or domestic flight. But a good number sit in the two Malé atolls, close enough to reach by speedboat or yacht straight from Velana International Airport, on Hulhulé island next to Malé. This guide lists the main ones, with transfer times as each resort states them on its own website. It's a guide to getting there, not a review: we haven't stayed at these resorts. Prices, inclusions and times change, so confirm with the resort when you book.

In short ⌄
  • Several resorts in North and South Malé Atoll can be reached by speedboat or yacht from Velana International Airport, with no seaplane needed.
  • The quickest, Kurumba and Bandos, are about 10 minutes away. Most others in this guide take 15 to 25 minutes. COMO Cocoa Island and Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi are about 40.
  • Speedboats usually run day and night, so they suit late flights. Seaplanes only fly in daylight.
  • Transfer prices vary widely and aren't always included, so check before you book.

Why a short transfer matters

  • Late arrivals: speedboats usually run day and night, while seaplanes only fly in daylight. With a late flight and a seaplane resort, you may need a night in Malé or Hulhumalé first.
  • Cost: boat transfers are usually much cheaper than seaplanes, though some resorts charge a lot for yachts.
  • Luggage: speedboats generally don't have the tight baggage limits of seaplanes.
  • Short stays: less time travelling means more time on the island, which helps on a stopover.

About 10 minutes

Kurumba Maldives

Kurumba, in North Malé Atoll, describes itself as just 10 minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport, with transfers around the clock. It's widely described as the first resort in the Maldives. Its house reef was one of those dive operators reported in poor condition in early 2026.

Bandos Maldives

Bandos, also in North Malé Atoll, says it's about 10 minutes from the airport, with speedboats timed to international arrivals and departures throughout the day and evening.

About 15 to 20 minutes

Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa

Marriott describes the Sheraton Full Moon, in North Malé Atoll, as a 15-minute speedboat transfer from Velana. It notes that its shared speedboat can involve a wait of up to an hour, and offers private transfers at extra cost.

CROSSROADS Maldives: SAii Lagoon and Hard Rock Hotel

CROSSROADS is a multi-resort development in South Malé Atoll, with a marina and shared facilities. Its operators describe it as about 15 minutes from the airport. SAii Lagoon gives 15 minutes by speedboat, while Hard Rock Hotel Maldives' current site says about 20 minutes. Transfers aren't included in SAii's room rates, and have to be booked in advance.

About 20 to 30 minutes

Gili Lankanfushi

Gili Lankanfushi, in North Malé Atoll, puts its speedboat transfer at about 20 to 30 minutes. Its press pages say 20, while its FAQ says 30 and gives a distance of about 20 km from the airport.

Baros Maldives

Baros, in North Malé Atoll, describes a 25-minute speedboat trip from touchdown at Velana. Its airport team meets guests in the international arrivals area.

Velassaru Maldives

Velassaru, in South Malé Atoll, says it's 25 minutes by speedboat from the airport, with transfers several times a day. Shared transfers are arranged as part of the booking, and private boats cost extra.

Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa

Four Seasons Kuda Huraa, in North Malé Atoll, gives about 25 minutes by speedboat, with the airport about 20 km away and transfers running 24 hours a day. It's also about five minutes by boat from the Sultans surf break. See our guide to surfing near Malé.

About 40 minutes

COMO Cocoa Island

COMO Cocoa Island, in South Malé Atoll, lists the trip at about 40 minutes by speedboat, around 30 km from the airport. Its team meets guests in the arrivals hall.

Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi

Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi, in South Malé Atoll, describes a 40-minute yacht journey from Velana, with a 15-minute seaplane option. It's at the top end on cost: Hilton has listed a shared return yacht transfer at US$960 per adult, plus tax and service charge, with waits of 30 to 60 minutes. Ithaafushi is also close to one of the sand borrow areas permitted for Ras Malé's reclamation.

Other resorts within boat reach

Many more resorts in the two Malé atolls can be reached by boat. They include One&Only Reethi Rah, which offers shared luxury boat transfers from Velana as well as private seaplanes. Others are OZEN Reserve Bolifushi, SO/ Maldives, Centara Ras Fushi, Sun Siyam Olhuveli, Kuda Villingili, Cinnamon Dhonveli, Club Med Kani and Kandooma. The last few are popular with surfers. Transfer times vary, so check each resort's own site for the current figure.

What transfers cost

Prices vary enormously, from free to hundreds of dollars a person. A few examples from the resorts' own pages:

  • SAii Lagoon: a shared return speedboat at about US$180 per adult, not included in room rates.
  • Sheraton Full Moon: shared return transfers listed at between US$64 and US$80 on different pages, with private boats at US$600 return.
  • Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi: a shared return yacht at US$960 per adult, plus a 28.7% tax and service charge, and private yachts from US$3,600 each way.

Some packages and offers include shared transfers, so compare the total cost, not just the room rate.

What to check before you book

  • Is the transfer included? Some packages include shared transfers, while others charge per person.
  • Shared or private? Shared boats are cheaper but can mean waiting at the airport for other guests.
  • Flight details: most resorts ask for them 72 hours or more before arrival.
  • Late or early flights: confirm the boat runs at your arrival time.
  • Where to meet: many resorts have a representative or counter in the arrivals hall. One&Only Reethi Rah, for example, lists its airport counter number. Ask where to find yours.
  • Sea conditions: transfers can be bumpy in the southwest monsoon, from about May to November.

Resorts and Ras Malé

Several of these resorts are in South Malé Atoll, the same atoll as Ras Malé. The new city will bring a waterfront and marina district of its own, developed by Eagle Hills, with hotels and resorts planned. Dredging for Ras Malé has also affected water quality across parts of the atoll. Read more in Ras Malé's environmental impact.

A night near the airport

If your flight lands very late or leaves very early, a night in Hulhumalé, next to the airport and linked to it by road, can make the transfer easier. Hulhumalé has hotels and guesthouses of its own, and a beach. See living in Greater Malé for more on the area.

Alternatives to a resort

If you want to be near Malé for less, consider a guesthouse on a local island such as Maafushi, Gulhi or Guraidhoo to the south, or Huraa, Himmafushi and Thulusdhoo to the north. Some resorts sell day passes to visitors staying on local islands. See our guides to the local islands near Ras Malé and North Malé Atoll's local islands, and our day trips from Malé.
